New Year Questions – Answered, again!

I am typing this on our new iPad while sitting in the shade of our tent on our camping holiday! Technology and free wi-fi, amazing! I have lots of lovely photographs to share and stories to tell when we get back next week, in the meantime I bring you the 2011 edition of the marvellous Sundry’s annual New Years Eve questions!

1. What did you do in 2011 that you’d never done before?
Its not so much a case of something I have NEVER done before, but I started race running again. Back in the days before children when Ron and I lived in London together, we used to run together, it was a form of fitness, escapism, a mutual pleasure. We ran the Nike 10km races three years in a row and even managed to slip in a cheeky half-marathon before we got married. This year I ran a 9km raced across the Sydney Harbour Bridge and a few months later I ran my first 10km. I am registered for a 5.5km race not this weekend, next weekend and will definitely be doing a few more 10kms in anticipation of running a half-marathon sometime in the future.

2. Did you keep your new year’s resolutions, and will you make more for next year?
Again I am proud and happy to announce that YES, I did keep my resolutions! I continued to focus on health and fitness on a personal level and completed not one, not two but THREE six week bootcamps this year. I continued to lose some weight but the biggest changes for me have been my fitness and measurements. I have loved spending time and energy on myself and am definitely all round a happier me and a better wife and parent as a result.

3. Anyone close to you give birth?
I met a few newborn babies this year thanks to my photography business Sarah White Images but no close friends here in Australia had any more babies this year. Friends overseas did which continues to make me feel very far away. So many babies and now children that I haven’t met. Sigh.

4. Did anyone close to you die?
A few close friends have suffered losses this year and my extended family has said goodbye to some loved ones.

5. What countries did you visit?
Another quiet year this year for me, however Ron did get to travel to New Zealand to watch the rugby world cup!

6. What would you like to have in 2012 that you lacked in 2011?
A little more self-control wouldn’t go amiss. I had plenty of motivation which is always good and lots of support but there were occasions when my own self-doubt and insecurities allowed me to make excuses for myself. I was lucky this year in that I had a lot of time to myself for the first time since Amy was born thanks to a shared childcare arrangement with a friend, this time allowed me to achieve lots but also do some not so good self-reflection at times.

7. What dates from 2011 will remain etched upon your memory, and why?
This year was a year for small milestones and big emotions, no actual dates stick out in my mind but there were many occasions worth mentioning, Amy’s school orientation days, Melbourne cup day spent with my parents and my sister and her boyfriend who were stranded thanks to qantas! Celebrating my birthday with friends and family. Celebrating Ron’s birthday with both our families!

8. What was your biggest achievement of the year?
Running across the harbour bridge in my first competitive race since before we were married, nearly 8 years ago! Achieving some personal sales goals for my business.

9. What was your biggest failure?
Its hard to focus on failure but I think possibly the one area I really let myself down in was staying focused on the weightloss aspect of my physical fitness journey. As soon as I eased off the twice weekly bootcamp, the weight slowly began to creep back and this is something I really want to address in the year ahead.

10. Did you suffer illness or injury?
Ron and I both had a terrible flu virus earlier in the year. It was the first time since I was a child that I remember having such an awful fever, I felt so desperately ill for 3 days that I didn’t really leave my bed much, thankfully Ron’s flexible work schedule and the fact that I conveniently got sick on a Friday night, meant I could stay in bed for three days and then take it easy for a further two. Then Ron got sick. Sigh. But you know what, he had all my sympathy because if he felt half as bad as I had, then he must have felt terrible.

Injury wise, I did suffer a few muscular aches and pains brought about by my increase in physical activity. I strained my adductor muscle in my upper thigh which caused me lots of pain and distress while training for the 9km bridge run. Thankfully a lot of work by my chiropracter and an adjustment to my running (no hills!) means I can now comfortably run 10kms without feeling crippled after!

11. What was the best thing you bought?
Hmmm, I finally became the proud owner of an iPhone 4 and then just before Christmas, in a moment of complete madness, I bought Ron an iPad! I already know that the iPad is going to live up to all the hype. Its something we desperately wanted but really didn’t need and even though we are still struggling to keep on top of things financially, I decided to go ahead and buy it, it’s a business expense and a little reward for the hard budgeting we have done and will continue to do.

12. Whose behavior merited celebration?
Mine! I got medals!
Amy’s! She graduated from preschool and took her school orientation in her stride. She continues to amaze me with her incredible mix of maturity and childlikeness, qualities I hope will continue to define her for many more years.

13. Whose behavior made you appalled and depressed?
No one close to me, thankfully.

14. Where did most of your money go?
No where special this year, groceries, preschool fees, paying off our credit card debt.

15. What did you get really, really, really excited about?
Being able to run for 10kms without stopping!

16. What song will always remind you of 2011?
Absolutely no doubt about this one this year, its has to be Paradise by Coldplay off their new album Mylo Xyloto. The whole album has become synonymous for me with the end of this fabulous year and especially our fantastic holiday with my family during and after the rugby world cup in October. Watch the video, my sister was AT THE CONCERT where Chris Martin explained to the audience that they were going to do something a bit odd at the end of their set for the new video for the new single and then they came out wearing their elephant heads and jumped around for a few minutes while they filmed them!

The opening bars of the song “Every Teardrop is a Waterfall” will always bring back vivid memories of running across the Harbour Bridge. Thanks to my wonderful iPhone I have been able to reconnect with so many of my old favourites and I am slowly but surely building up my music collection again.

17. Compared to this time last year, are you:
a) happier or sadder? Happier, it seems to grow year on year now as parents.
b) thinner or fatter? Thinner, again, yay, and next year hopefully I will be able to answer THINNER again!
c) richer or poorer? No richer, no poorer which in itself is a huge deal for us. Ron and I have made some hard decisions over the years and our choice for me to give up my job and for us to move to Australia so I could stay home with Amy until she went to school, well, it was one of the hardest things I have ever done but such an achievement! We did it, our little baby starts school at the end of January 2012, the end of an era, the beginning of a new one.

18. What do you wish you’d done more of?
Running, talking to friends far away, dinners with the girls, days on the beach.

19. What do you wish you’d done less of?
Shouting, still not my finest parenting attribute. Mindless eating.

20. How did you spend Christmas?
Christmas was a quiet one again for us this year, we woke up and then waited an hour for the girls to wake up! Before opening presents with my parents on skype in South Africa and then heading off to church. After church we spent the day with my inlaws, opening presents, eating vast quantities, napping and playing with new toys. Later Ron and I left the girls with Grandma and Grandad and continuing in the tradition of last year and a few years before that, we went round to our friends Margaret and David and spent a lovely night drinking and celebrating with them.

21. Did you fall in love in 2012?
No, my love for my husband continues to grow as does my love for my children. Loving myself gets easier and easier the older I get!

22. What was your favorite TV program?
Again Ron and I loved watching Survivor. We also relished the new Underbelly Razor series and watched The Block and Renovaters. A series I wanted to watch but chose to read the books first is The Game of Thrones, can’t wait to watch that next year. Also, catching up on three series of Dexter!

23. Do you hate anyone now that you didn’t hate this time last year?
Nope, not a hater.

24. What was the best book you read?
The girls and I rediscovered our love for the library and I have been devouring books at an incredible rate! I read the entire series of George RR Martin’s A Song of Ice and Fire and LOVED it, a dark and at times completely shocking set of novels. It would be hard to list just one book as I have read so many, so wonderful to have time to read in bed knowing I am going to still get a good night’s sleep thanks to Stella finally finding her rhythm and sleep patterns.

25. What was your greatest musical discovery?
Adele? I suppose that’s the easiest answer, I hadn’t listened to her prior to 2011 and now love all her albums. Coldplay’s new album moved me once again, I can’t believe I have been listening to that band since 1999 when I bought their Parachutes album on a whim. Even more unbelievable that I still haven’t seen them live on stage. Soon, my time will come.

26. What did you want and get?
A fitter, stronger, healthier, happier body and state of mind.

27. What did you want and not get?
Nothing comes to mind!

28. What was your favorite film of this year?
I used a free ticket to take myself off to an early preview of Bridesmaids as a little treat! I laughed so hard I cried and couldn’t catch my breath, brilliant!

29. What did you do on your birthday, and how old were you?
I turned 35 and had an incredible birthday! My Mum was here staying and we were planning a brilliant birthday brunch for

30. What one thing would have made your year immeasurably more satisfying?
Being braver in my business, my skills have grown so much over the last year, I need to take more risks and be bolder.

31. How would you describe your personal fashion concept in 2012?
This is one I can answer this time, I was lucky that my personal shopper came over twice this year (my mum!) and we spent a bit of time combing the stores for bargains, I now own lots of lovely skirts and tops and teamed with some bold jewelry choices I feel a lot more put together! I also purchased my FIRST ever pair of skinny jeans, silly really at my age but I wear them tucked into boots and I feel fabulous! I have also bought some lovely dresses this year, formal and casual and am making more of an effort to dress up daily rather than down. Finally one of my favorite purchases this year has to have been my Adidas running outfit thanks to a voucher I won online, running skins, fuscia pink top and funky new running bras, awesome!

32. What kept you sane?
Ron’s calm influence and unphased nature as always continues to help me keep my feet on the ground. While I stress out over school and big decisions, Ron thinks quietly and always manages to say just what I need to hear.

33. Which celebrity/public figure did you fancy the most?
Hmmm, probably Chris Martin from coldplay although I also still continue to harbour an irrational fascination with Hamish of Hamish and Andy! (UPDATED to add that I am thrilled Hamish is now engaged to his girlfriend, but sad, thrilled, but sad!)

34. What political issue stirred you the most?
George clooney’s opinions on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan really struck a chord with me, google it, he is so not just a pretty face.

35. Who did you miss?
Friends and family far away, keep in touch now you guys….

36. Who was the best new person you met?
Once again I have been very lucky to meet some lovely new people through playgroup and preschool. The dance class mums are a god send and I look forward to developing even stronger friendships with many of these people as we transition to primary school.

37. Tell us a valuable life lesson you learned in 2011.
Self belief is a magical quality, I am capable of so much more than I ever thought possible, now just to instill this self-belief in my girls!
