The Super Whites The ordinary life of a Super Mum

The Super Whites
Playdough Recipe

Playdough – like Mum used to make

2 cups plain flour
1/2 cup salt
4 tablespoons cream of tartar
1 tablespoon vegetable oil
2 cups water
food colouring

  • Mix the flour, salt and cream of tartar in a large cooking pot
  • stir in the water, oil and food colouring.

( I opted to go au naturel for the first batch because as I mentioned, I have managed to die my hands blue before with food colouring. Don’t ask, it was blue food day in our student digs back at uni. If you want to add the food colouring, check its not going to come off the playdough, trust me, its hard enough to clean up a toddler with playdough all over them, don’t try wiping down a little person who is stained BLUE. You could halve the recipe and do two pots with two colours.)

  • cook over a low heat until the mixture thickens, approximately 10 minutes
  • KEY AT THIS POINT – stirring. You have to stir continuosly and don’t panic if the mixture gets really, really lumpy. I panicked and started berating myself for being a useless Mum, sunburning my child and not even capable of making playdough! However the dough did come together beautifully, not a lump in sight.
  • You know the dough is ready when its almost impossible to stir anymore, its just a big sticky mass.
  • Leave to cool, preferably stuck in one big ball otherwise little bits dry out and get a bit crusty.
  • When the mixture has cooled down enough to handle, pull together in play size balls and knead and roll together. Get your cookie cutters out and clear a space for playtime!
  • According to the recipe this playdough should last for 3 months so long as its kept in an airtight container in the fridge.

Have fun!
